Auction Market Theory
Every instrument in this stage measures a piece of the same thing. Auction Market Theory is the name of the thing. It says a market exists to facilitate trade, and that it rotates endlessly between agreeing on a price and going to look for a better one.

The framework
The ideas were developed by J. Peter Steidlmayer, a trader on the Chicago exchanges, and they are worth attributing properly because most of what people call «order flow» today is a footnote to them.
Three principles carry the whole thing:
- The market's purpose is to facilitate trade. It advertises prices in order to find business, and it goes wherever business can be found.
- It alternates between balance and imbalance. Agreement produces a lot of volume in a narrow range; disagreement produces travel.
- Movement is price discovery, not judgement. Exactly the sentence from the article on the auction earlier in this stage.
The playbook this site is built on puts the conclusion better than a textbook does:
That constant rotation between balance and imbalance is the heartbeat of the market. It has always been this way, and it always will be.
The vocabulary
These words appear constantly in order flow writing. They come from here, and the next stage of this path builds the instrument that draws them.
| TPO | Time Price Opportunity: a mark for each price traded in each time interval. The building block of the original profile. |
| Value area | The range containing roughly 70% of the period's activity. That figure is a definition of how the area is drawn, not a probability about anything. |
| POC | Point of control: the single price with the most activity. The centre of agreement. |
| HVN and LVN | High and low volume nodes: prices where a lot or almost nothing traded. |
| Tail, or excess | A sharp rejection at an extreme — price went there and found nobody. |
| Initial balance | The first hour's range. Already met, in the article on the opening range. |
What the frame is actually for
Not prediction. It gives you a question you can answer with the instruments in this stage, which is rarer and more useful than it sounds:
Is this market currently balanced, or is it travelling?
That question has an observable answer. Volume accumulating in a narrow range with aggression met on both sides is balance. Volume thinning while price covers ground with one side crossing is imbalance. Every article in this stage was a way of seeing that.
And it explains why plans fail in the way the article on the four types of day described: a method built for balance applied to a travelling market is not slightly wrong, it is aimed at a different state of the world.
The honest limit
Used loosely, this framework explains everything and therefore predicts nothing. Any move can be narrated afterwards as a search for value, and any consolidation as balance. A theory that cannot be wrong is a vocabulary, not a model.
The discipline that keeps it honest is the same one this path has asked for since the second stage: say what you expect to see, in advance, and say what would tell you that you were wrong. «I think this is balance, so I expect the edges to hold and volume to stay heavy in the middle — and price accepting outside the range would tell me it is not» is a usable statement. «The market is seeking value» is not.
That is stage 7
Nine articles, and one idea told nine ways: somebody crossed the spread, and something on the other side either held or ran out. The book shows what is waiting, the tape shows what happened, the footprint shows where inside the bar, delta counts the aggression, absorption is aggression meeting a wall, an imbalance is aggression meeting nobody — and the auction is the reason any of it moves.
The next stage takes the same idea and looks at it from one more angle: volume arranged by price instead of by time, which is where the value area and the point of control stop being vocabulary and become a chart.
If you want to go deeper
Two for the stage, and the second one was mentioned earlier in this path for a reason.
