Combining context with flow

The routine is simple enough to write in three lines. What makes it work or fail is a single word, and it is one the whole industry uses approvingly: confirmation. Arrive at a level with your mind made up and the flow will confirm anything you like.

The three layers

This is the structure from the playbook, and it is the same shape as the timeframe layers from the second stage of this path — which is a good sign: it means the method has one skeleton rather than several.

WIDE TO NARROW, NEVER THE OTHER WAY CONTEXT Which area of the chart is worth attention at all? daily · hourly LOCATION Which price inside that area, and why that one? profile · levels FLOW What is actually happening now that price is here? tape · footprint Reading flow first and then looking for a level to justify it is this diagram upside down. Diagram 1. Each layer narrows the question the next one has to answer. The flow layer is small on purpose: it is the only one that expires in seconds.

What each layer is allowed to decide

  1. Context decides whether today is interesting at all. Where is price relative to the recent structure, what kind of day does the session look like, is anything scheduled. Most of this was the fifth stage of this path.
  2. Location decides the price. The map stage and the profile stage exist for this: a specific level, marked before price gets there, with a reason attached.
  3. Flow decides whether anything is happening. Not whether to trade — whether the level is being defended, ignored, or run through.

Notice that no layer is allowed to overrule the one above it. Flow cannot promote a price that context never marked, and that restriction is the entire value of the arrangement.

The word that ruins it

Everything above is standard. Here is the part that decides whether it works for you.

There is always aggression somewhere. If you arrive at your level wanting to buy, you will find buying. «Confirmation» found after the decision is not evidence — it is permission.

This is the same failure as timeframe shopping in the third stage and manufactured confluence in the sixth, arriving in its most convincing costume, because now the thing agreeing with you is real-time data.

The defence is one sentence, written before price arrives:

«At this level I expect to see ____ , and seeing ____ instead would tell me I am wrong.»

Both halves are required. The first alone is a wish. Filled in properly it looks like this — and note that it contains no instruction, only observations:

  • Expect: heavy volume arriving with price refusing to continue, size at the level being consumed and replaced.
  • Would disprove it: price trading through on ordinary volume with nothing being replaced, or the level's size disappearing without trades.

Those two lines take thirty seconds to write and they convert a stage of reading into something that can be wrong — which is the only property that makes a method worth keeping.

When they disagree

They will, often, and the honest answer is unglamorous.

Context says a level matters and the flow says nothing is happening: that is a complete reading. The level is not being defended today. Doing nothing is the correct response, and it is the response nobody counts as a decision.

Flow is dramatic somewhere your map never marked: also a complete reading, and the answer is the same. The dramatic part is that this happens constantly, and every instrument in the previous stage is very good at making it look important.

The next article takes the same argument down one more level of detail, with the two instruments that pair best.
