The mind games of a fast market

The playbook this site is built on opens this subject with a sentence worth keeping: the market does not manipulate you — it exploits biases you already had. Knowing them is half the answer. The other half is that noticing a bias while it is happening does not work, so each one needs something mechanical.

Six of them

The biasWhat it makes you doWhat actually stops it
Fear of missing out Price moves without you, so you enter late, with no level and no stop. A written note where you can see it: this candle is not the last one. And no entry without the two lines from the combining article.
Revenge trading You just lost, so you take the next move to get it back. Close the platform for ten minutes after a stop. And the daily limit on losing trades from the previous article.
Confirmation bias You only see the evidence that agrees with the position you want. Before entering: what would I have to see NOT to take this? If you cannot answer, the bias has already won.
Loss aversion Widening the stop «to give it room». Taking profits far too early. The stop is decided before entry and placed with the broker, not held in your head.
Overconfidence After a good run, sizing up on a trade that is not better than the others. Size decided by the arithmetic, not by the mood. Fixed in the plan before the session.
Boredom Forcing a trade in the dead hours because nothing has happened. A planned use for the quiet window — review, preparation, or closing the laptop.

Why «be disciplined» is not advice

Look at the third column again. Not one of those is an instruction to feel differently.

That is deliberate, and it is the most useful idea in this stage. All six biases are at their strongest exactly when you are least able to notice them — that is what a bias is. A defence that depends on noticing is a defence that fails in precisely the situation it was built for.

WHY THE DECISION HAS TO BE MADE EARLY how clearly you can think how much you feel the trade opens Everything that has to be decided calmly is on the left of that line. MAK EDGE LAB

The three that matter most

They are not equally expensive.

  • Revenge trading destroys accounts fastest, because it arrives with size and without a plan. It is also the easiest to block mechanically: a timer and a daily count.
  • Loss aversion is the most common, and the most disguised — moving a stop feels like conviction. The article on how much account you need showed what a widened stop does to the arithmetic that justified the position.
  • Confirmation bias is the one this whole path has been circling: timeframe shopping, manufactured confluence, profiles refitted after the fact, flow found to «confirm». It is the same failure wearing four costumes, and it is why every stage insisted on writing down what would prove you wrong.

And the one nobody names

Two more things belong here, and they are not biases so much as conditions.

Tiredness — from the article about not living in New York. Trading the last hour of the American session after a full working day is not a discipline problem, it is a predictable state, and the honest response is to plan around it rather than push through.

And needing the money. Every rule in this stage gets harder when a particular week has to work out. Nothing in this path can fix that, and pretending otherwise would be the least honest thing on the site. What it can do is say plainly that a plan built for a calm mind will be tested by circumstances that are not calm, and that this is the normal condition of the job rather than a personal failing.
